Pickering Beck
Pickering Beck as we know and refer to it is the section of Beck below Town. It runs from Vivas Mill downstream to including Big Crooks below Ings Bridge.
It has been fished by the club members since 1892.
Much of the fishing rights are owned by the PFA but we still lease most of the beat from vivas Mill downstream to and including the field above Low Mill.
Recently we suceeded in a first registration claim on teh Right bank by the roadside from below the mill downstream to Little Crooks.
Although the club has fished it since 1892 the ownership had not been registered until recently thereby legally securing the fishing for members only.

The Duchy
The Duchy beat is the part of Pickering Beck immediately above the Town of Pickering.
It derives it's name from the Duchy of Lancaster, it is owned by King charles III. The fishing rights are on a long term lease to the PFA.
Although it has always been famous for it's abundant wild brown trout it has revently been producing Grayling throughout it's length.
It is rewarding fishing if you can master the very different art of fishing at close quarters in an over grown stream.

Costa & Oxfolds
The Costa Anglers Club (CAC) had this fishing in hand from1892 until ww2.. So it was fished before this date. The PFA began to take up fishing rights from the early 1950's. Capt.Arthur Oglesby gave the PFA the founding CAC minutes which, in 1889, refer to a 9.75lb brown trout being caught. PFA minutes record Pike up to 32lb in the 1970's. The famous Author Carter-Platts referred in his book to teh Costa being one of teh best Grayling rivers in the country. Sadly they along with the brown trout have suffered due to pollution.
Following a Judicial Review in Jul 2023, a failed Appeal by the Secretary of State EFRA in Jan 2025, a second uncontested JR in March 2025, a second court order was sealed in Dec 2025 requiring the EA to update the River Basin Management Plan for the Upper Costa Waterbody, to create a Programmes of Measures to include RNAG's (reasons For Not Achiving Good) under the Water Framenwork Directive and to then list the Mitigation Measures and implement those to achieve Good by Dec 2027. Work will be ongoing for 3 years yet but we have already been regrading parts of the beck and 17,500 grayling fingerlings have been liberated since June 2024. It is a war we are hopefully winning at last.

Thornton Beck
In stark contrast to the Lower section, that runs below town through agricultural fields, the Upper Section runs up to and through Dalby Forest.
The two sections could not be more differerent.
Although the lower section has been suffering from Sewage spills the Upper section is untainted and absolutely stuffed with wild brown trout.
Knee pads, short rods and light lines are the answer for a most enjoyable experience not to be forgotten.
Whilst the beck is lightly maintained you can still false cast but bow and arrow casting together with rolll casting in your list of skills should see good sport.

Papermill
In recent years the club replaced the old blue pioneerss with new Polport
double keel boats for added stability. They offer a safe and comfortable way to fish this wonderful lake for stocked brown trout.
With year round fishing Papermill together with Pexton provides PFA Members with fly fishing no matter what the river levels are.
Sited not far below Dalby forest it is accessed via Ellerburn up past the trout farm. There are two ways to access the lake:
Park below the trout farm and walk up to the gate via the public footpath adjacent to the trout farm (not through it)

Parking is available beyond High Papermill Farm (ensure you close gates behind you).

Please Note:
Dogs are allowed at Papermill but must be under strict control at all times. If you cannot control your dog or are unsure then please do not take it with you.
Pexton
Sat in the surrounding beauty of Dalby forest our Pexton lake fishing is stocked with hard fighting Rainbow Trout.
It is a most relaxing place accessed via the forest Drive from Dalby Village. PFA Members enjoy free access and egress to Dalby as we registere our members cars for free passage through the ANPR barrier.

We have our own lock on the south side of the forest drive barrier allowing us access for what is just over a mile's drive though scenery that makes one think of driving through parts of Canada.

With thornton Beck adjacent to it one can enjoy some lake fishing and a trout for the pot and then some wild trout fishing before or afterwards.

Kingthorpe
The Kingthorpe beat is the part of Pickering Beck that is upstream of the Duchy.
It is unaltered and until recently we doubt the trout have even seen a human's shadow let alone a fishing fly.
An unspoilt beck if ever there was one.
The deep holes have even been providing sport with sizable grayling caught on a streamer!Needless to say the trout are tremendous.

It boasts double bank fishing all the way up to the railway bridge just below Farwath.
